Ubuntu 10.10 will feature multi-touch

New for fans of Ubuntu: from version 10.10, system will support multi-touch, allowing developers to create interfaces with support for ringtones and screen movements and presenting a whole new method of navigation for users.

Right at launch of distro, many applications will already have GTK support enabling touch, among other things, lateral or horizontal scroll directly on screen of equipment. And for Ubuntu Netbook Edition, will have an interface with support for Unity touch.

Mark Shuttleworth, in a statement on his blog, explains more about novelty, stressing that to take full advantage of technology you need equipment to support movements of four or more fingers. Mark also talks about the possibility of a version 11.04 of Ubuntu already come with most common software applications such as browsers, file manager, photos and media and supports multi-touch. Can you imagine, control effects of Compiz directly touching screen?

If you already have a device with support for touch and want to test, just add a repository to Ubuntu:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:utouch-team/utouch
  • sudo apt-get update
Recalling that package utouch is still in beta, and likely many programs will not support news yet.
